Account Book of the Kerwin Family
Wyoming County, New York

Compiled by Jennifer Williams

For more information contact Jennifer Williams

This account book belong to James Kerwin. He was born in 1835 in Java (Center), New York. His parents came from Ireland. James Kerwin's parents were Matthew Kerwin (1803 - 6 Feb 1879) and Ann McCarthy (1811- 11 Feb 1887), both born in Ireland but both died in Java Center (information from Walter J. Hastrich). James married Kate O'Brien, who was born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1837. Kate's mother was Mary Merrigan, born in 1815 in County Waterford, Ireland. Her father was born in County Galway. There is no date of their marriage, but they had five children. James died 3 November 1903 and Kate died 2 December 1890 and she is buried in Java, New York.

The account book is filled with small personal accounts. It is not a complete nor comprehensive look at life in Java, New York. But it does offer a glimpse at life for James Kerwin in the 1870's and 1880's. The pagination is my own numbering since not every page contains information. Some pages contain only figuring with no context to explain the accounting. I have made no attempt to correct spelling or grammar.
